Little Arkansas River (Halstead)

General Information

Fishing at the river in and around Halstead can prove to be very productive. Catfish can range in size from less than a pound to more than fifty pounds. Crappie are also present, although difficult to locate. Carp and drum are numerous as well as sunfish.

Fishing Spots

The river is lower than it was several years ago. Because of this some of my favorite spots are no longer productive and I'm forced to look at some new spots.

Below the dam, under the Main Street Bridge, you can probably still catch some fish. Although, with it being more shallow there are probably not very high numbers of eating size fish.

The deeper waters above the dam may be better to find higher numbers of fish. Where Black Kettle Creek meets the river would be a good place to try.

Below the bridge on County Road 801, on the West side of town, several people have reported getting some decent numbers and size of catfish, and even a few crappie in the spring. Dip bait has worked well on this river in the past. If using live or cut bait, try catching some sunfish or perch from the shoreline below the dam to use for bait.

Hopefully we can get some decent rains this spring to get the water level up in the river and Black Kettle Creek this year. When the creek has sufficient water levels, it is a great place to catch large carp and some eating size channel cat.
